Randell Research Center

The Randell Research Center (RRC) is part the Florida Museum of Natural History. We are dedicated to teaching the archaeology, history, and ecology of southwest Florida. Our motto is, “As we learn, we teach.”

Families can visit the Calusa Heritage Trail, which is open daily from sunrise to sunset, including holidays. Along the trail, visitors will see two large shell mounds, constructed by the Calusa people over thousands of years, as well as the remnants of the Pine Island Canal, an indigenous canal that once crossed the island from Pine Island Sound to the Matlacha pass. Interpretive signs along the trail share information about Calusa history, culture, and village life.

Guided tours are available seasonally (December-April) or you can schedule a tour for a group of 3 or more during the off season. Donations of $7 per adult, $5 per senior, and $4 per child help maintain this important archaeological site.
